BATTAMBANG: A man suspected of being broken hearted after a relationship went sour committed suicide by detonating a bomb in a pond, frightening people awake from the noise at 6:30am on Tuesday, 7 February 2023.

The man's body was removed from the pond at the Monument for Veterans in Group 7, Bek Chan Thmey Village, Sangkat Prek Preah Sdach, Battambang City.

Sources at the scene confirmed that the victim was named Chen Thuren, a 23-year-old restaurant worker living in Prakeab village, Rong Chrey commune, Thmor Kol district, Battambang province.

According to the same sources, the victim was out drinking till 3 am on Monday, 6 February. After drinking heavily at a party, he is said to have felt deeply saddened by something related to his love life, and decided to commit suicide by detonating himself along with a low-grade Soviet-made bomb in a pond, causing himself to be seriously injured and to drown.

After the incident, the competent authorities went to inspect the body at the scene. The forensic officer of Battambang Provincial Police and the accompanying medical team concluded that the victim died from suicide bombing.

Authorities have handed over the man's body to his relatives for the traditional funeral ceremony.
